Next time you're digging for evidence, it's worth taking a look at the new guide Useful Tips and Tools to Research the Deep Web on the Online College Blog, which explains that "Experts say that typical search engines like Yahoo! and Google only pick up about 1% of the information available on the Internet. The rest of that information is considered to be hidden in the deep web, also referred to as the invisible web."
They've compiled a handy directory of meta-search engines (such as DogPile), semantic tools (such as FreeBase), search engines and databases (academic, scientific, etc.), plus custom search engines (more info at sites like CustomSearchEngine.com) and collaborative ones (such as delicious and StumbleUpon). Also included are search tips and strategies, plus links to resources, such as Wikipedia's Deep Web page. Here's a snapshot of what they've put together:
